WE CROWN YOU
Theology and Chords
Lyrics and Theology
Verse 1:
Lowly here in darkness we were waiting
Longing the arrival of the King
From the throne of Heaven came our Savior
Into the darkness light began to break
Verse 2:
We laid a crown of thorns upon our Savior
His body broken beaten bruised and bound
But hope arises when we see He's risen
The thorns have now become the Victor's crown
Chorus 1:
We Crown You now, Lord of all creation
We come bow down and worship at Your feet
Worthy is the Lamb, Worthy is the Lamb
Verse 3:
Haste the day when all will be made perfect
When Heaven comes and faith is turned to sight
Our Father seated on His throne forever
the Lamb of God seated at His side
But we won't wait to crown Him Lord of Life
Chorus 2:
We lift our voice in praise and adoration
We lift our hands and bless your Holy Name
Worthy is the Lamb, Worthy is the Lamb
Bridge:
Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne
Let praise rise as hope resounds, the grave his overthrown
Awake my soul and sing, of Him who died for me
Declare this, the Risen King, He reigns in victory
Verse 1
This is the hope that we have as followers of Jesus: that though we were dead in our sins, God’s love toward us was greater than our sin (Eph. 2:1-5). The way that God showed this love for us was by sending his son, Jesus, who died for our sins while we were still sinners (Rom. 5:8). The incarnation, then, is central to the hope we find in the gospel. Indeed it is true, into the darkness light began to break.
Verse 2
In Jesus’ incarnation, the King of Kings took on flesh. Though he was the promised Messiah and deserving of all worship and praise, Jesus took a crown of thorns (Matt.27:29). His body was broken in our place, bound to a cross, beaten and bruised for our sin (Is. 53:5). As Jesus defeated sin on the cross so he also defeated death in his resurrection. The crown of thorns became the victor’s crown. Our King has risen from the dead.
Chorus 1
Our response to the truth of Christ’s death and resurrection for the forgiveness of our sins is to worship. We crown Jesus as Lord and give him praise. We bow down in worship. We join the song of heaven in Revelation 5:12 saying, “Worthy is the Lamb”.
Verse 3
As we wait with longing for our King to one day return, we pray, “haste the day when all will be made perfect.” When Christ returns, there will be no more sorrow, no more pain, no more sin and we will worship for all eternity. But we do not wait until then to live lives of worship to our God. We worship now. We Crown him now with praise, with honor, and with obedience.
Chorus 2
Similar to the first chorus, chorus two gives us language to direct our praise to the Lord. We praise God with our voices, but we also bless the Lord with how we position ourselves toward him (Psalm 134:2).
Bridge
Like the chorus, this bridge gives us language for our worship. We join the elders in Revelation casting down our crowns before the Lord (Rev. 4:10-11). We remember the hope we have in the gospel, “death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your string? (1 Cor. 15:55). The grave is overthrown, and our King reigns in victory.
